Have some questions or concerns about LASIK surgery? Take a look at our frequently asked questions below or contact us today.
Is the laser treatment painful?
NO! One of the beautiful things about LASIK is that the procedure is painless. No injections are given and you can usually return to work the next day, pain free. At times, eyes can be red or irritable but this is a short, temporary problem and normally goes away in one or two days.
How well will I see after surgery?
Most patients see well enough to drive themselves to our office the next day. How well you will see will depend on your prescription. People who are not very nearsighted usually recover more quickly than people who are highly nearsighted. Remember, everyone heals differently, and while most people are near 20/20 the next morning, some of the higher prescriptions may take more time to stabilize. Most patients are able to drive to a quick, post-op visit the next day and then to work. It is rare to be unable to resume normal activities soon after surgery.
What are the risks of LASIK?
All surgeries have some risk. Very few patients develop complications. After a thorough pre-operative eye exam, the surgeon will discuss any risks that may apply to you.
Can I dispose of glasses and contacts forever?
Most likely! The vast majority of our patients don't need glasses or contacts following surgery. However, when people reach early to mid 40s, they will still need reading glasses. This is the natural aging process of the eye which cannot be corrected by LASIK.
Can anyone have LASIK?
Patients must be at least 18 and their prescription should have been stable for at least a year prior to LASIK. Most people stabilize in their late teens or early 20s. There are a few medical conditions which could exclude a patient from having surgery. Before having LASIK, all patients are examined by the surgeon to ensure that they are a good candidate for vision correction.
Can both eyes be operated on at the same time?
Nearly all patients have both eyes corrected at the same time. There are no additional fees if patients elect to have their eyes corrected on different days. Most of our patients prefer the convenience of having both eyes corrected simultaneously.
Does my medical insurance pay for LASIK?
Probably not. At this time, most insurance companies consider LASIK surgery as a cosmetic surgical procedure. There are a few employers who have added special riders to their company's insurance policy to cover this procedure. Our staff will be glad to investigate if your insurance policy will cover LASIK and we have several financing companies that offer affordable monthly payments.
Are the results of LASIK surgery permanent?
YES! Once your vision has been fully corrected, the results are permanent. It is still possible to develop other medical conditions as you age that could change your vision.
How do I keep from blinking during LASIK?
We use an instrument called a lid speculum which gently holds the eyelids open. Once the eye is anesthetized, the lid speculum is painlessly placed under both the upper and lower eye lids to prevent the eye from blinking during surgery.
Can LASIK correct astigmatism and farsightedness?
YES!
What if I can't see as well as I want after surgery?
Laser surgery is extremely accurate and there are only a few cases where a patient has a remaining prescription; this is called "under correction." In these few cases, an additional laser procedure can be performed to correct the remaining prescription. There is no additional charge if an additional correction is required.
Why should I choose the Kleiman | Evangelista Eye Center to perform my LASIK surgery?
EXPERIENCE! Our surgeons have been performing refractive surgeries since 1985. We were the first to use an FDA-approved excimer laser for vision correction in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
Aside from LASIK, what about other surgical procedures like PRK, ALK and RK?
We have performed all the above procedures at various times over the last decade when each was considered state-of-the-art. We believe that the title, "state-of-the-art," belongs to LASIK. The LASIK procedure is by far the most advanced technology for correction of refractive errors in practice today.
How much is LASIK?
It depends on what your prescription is. The best way to determine the cost would be for you to come in for a free screening.
What is the best laser?
All FDA-approved lasers are good lasers. We use the Visx S4 ActiveTrack Laser which is used by top LASIK Surgeons world-wide.
Do you do IntraLASIK?
Yes, our Surgeons perform Blade-Free HD IntraLASIK, the safest procedure available in LASIK laser vision correction. LASIK, whether it is an all-laser procedure or simply a traditional procedure, is a two-step process. A flap must first be created so that the excimer laser can be used to correct your vision.
How many years have your surgeons performed LASIK?
After FDA approval in October 1995, the Kleiman Evangelista Eye Center performed the first laser eye surgery in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. Today, LASIK is the focal point of our surgical practice.
Prior to 1995, our doctors performed several other refractive procedures such as RK, AK and ALK. Our doctors have performed over 20,000 refractive procedures.
How long does the LASIK procedure take?
The actual procedure generally lasts less than 10 minutes for both eyes.
What happens if my vision goes back?
The results of LASIK are permanent. If, however, your vision does deteriorate over time, we have a lifetime guarantee on enhancements.
What happens if I get cataracts?
LASIK will not cause cataracts nor will it interfere with cataract surgery.
Will LASIK cause my eyes to become dry?
Your eyes may become a little dry immediately following surgery. This should go away within a couple of days. But in some cases symptoms of dryness may last longer.
