How do ReSTOR implants help patients achieve complete or nearly-complete freedom from eyeglasses? Through a patented "apodized diffractive" technology that makes each ReSTOR lens essentially two lenses in one. Like any standard implant designed to replace the eye's natural crystalline lens—whether clouded by a cataract or compromised by presbyopia—ReSTOR provides the refraction required for comfortable long-distance vision. It exceeds ordinary implants even better by also providing the diffraction needed for seeing close objects clearly and it smooths (or "apodizes") the transition between these extremes to provide excellent middle-distance performance.

With the advent of the AcrySof ReSTOR intraocular lens, however, presbyopes have another option—an option which, for many, offers greater freedom from eyeglasses than even LASIK can provide. How? Because while a presbyope may regain perfect or nearly perfect distance vision through LASIK surgery, this cornea-reshaping procedure has virtually no effect on the ability to focus on objects close at hand. This means glasses for reading and possibly for personal computing are still required. Replacing the eye's gradually deteriorating, presbyopic crystalline lenses with ReSTOR implants, on the other hand, can restore clear, comfortable vision from near to far. This provides the best possible result—and best possible solution—for many presbyopes.
