If you have cataracts or wear reading glasses or bifocals, this breakthrough implant could turn back the clock to the days before you ever needed corrective lenses. AcrySof ReSTOR offers outstanding visual acuity for all distances—near, intermediate and far—to eliminate or greatly reduce your dependence on eyeglasses or contacts.

During clinical trials conducted in the United States and Europe*, more than 80% of the patients who received ReSTOR implants in both eyes reported no longer needing glasses for any activity. Of the small percentage who did still have to wear glasses or contacts:

Imagine peering at the small display screen of a digital camera, perusing the menu in a dimly-lit restaurant or following the flight of a golf ball under overcast skies...all without wearing glasses. That is the sort of all-around performance most patients enjoy with AcrySof ReSTOR implants.

The Restor Difference: Apodized Diffractive Technology

How do ReSTOR implants help patients achieve complete or nearly-complete freedom from eyeglasses? Through a patented "apodized diffractive" technology that makes each ReSTOR lens essentially two lenses in one. Like any standard implant designed to replace the eye's natural crystalline lens—whether clouded by a cataract or compromised by presbyopia—ReSTOR provides the refraction required for comfortable long-distance vision. It exceeds ordinary implants even better by also providing the diffraction needed for seeing close objects clearly and it smooths (or "apodizes") the transition between these extremes to provide excellent middle-distance performance.

A Proven Procedure

Although relatively new to the United States, the ReSTOR lens has been proven safe and effective in more than 11,000 implants—in Europe and elsewhere—since 2003. Its March 2005 approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) followed clinical trials involving 566 patients with a median age of 69. In addition to the freedom-from-glasses statistics mentioned above, 94% of the participants said they would have ReSTOR lenses implanted again, a result which says as much about the benign nature of the procedure as it does about ReSTOR's satisfying visual performance.

Not Just for Cataract Patients: An Ideal Choice for Many Presbyopes

The natural loss of transparency and elasticity of the eye's crystalline lens that occurs as a normal part of the aging process—a condition called presbyopia—afflicts literally everybody sooner or later, typically around age 45. The usual corrective response is reading glasses, bifocals, trifocals or "no line" progressive lenses. With the advent of the AcrySof ReSTOR intraocular lens, however, presbyopes have another option—an option which, for many, offers greater freedom from eyeglasses than even LASIK can provide. How? Because while a presbyope may regain perfect or nearly perfect distance vision through LASIK surgery, this cornea-reshaping procedure has virtually no effect on the ability to focus on objects close at hand. This means glasses for reading and possibly for personal computing are still required. Replacing the eye's gradually deteriorating, presbyopic crystalline lenses with ReSTOR implants, on the other hand, can restore clear, comfortable vision from near to far. This provides the best possible result—and best possible solution—for many presbyopes.
